I can kick with accuracy now!!!
The Loughborough Women's Football Club taught a couple of us rugbly girls how to kick for a conversion. Well, how to kick then the ball is on the tee. As many of you have come ot find out, the way the ball is positioned is TOTALLY dependant on the kicker's preferences. There's no set way to place the ball on the tee. Experiment to see which one is most comfortable for you.
BUT, what works for me is to place the ball almost completely vertical (only barely facing towards me). Then take 3 big steps back and 2 steps to the side. Kick the ball not with your entire instep, but with the inner part of your instep. So if you're looking at your rugby boot, it's the inside half of your laces area.
Imagine a half-way point on the ball, then move half way down from there (a quarter up the ball). That is the best spot for the ball to be kicked. Make sure to square your hips to wherever your target is. Remember to follow through with the kick as well - kick that little bastard all the way!!!!!

Keep hips square. Turn hips only in the direction in which you want the ball to go. Kick the ball with your instep (where your laces are) with the ball's point. It'll definately make the kick go farther!
Imagine being behing the 22 meter mark. Have the scrumhalf get the ball out to the kicker. HAve someone else rush the kicker to create a sense of rushing and pressure. Pick a target as far up and OUT of the boundary lines as you can. Run after the ball immediately after you kick it. Remember, it doesnt help if you kick the ball from behind the 22 and it stays in bounds because the other team can easily return the kick.
Practice both legs.
OMGZ THIS DRILL IS SO FUN!

Drill to work on:
Set up 4 cones: 2 close together and another 2 about 25 meters away.
Split up into 2 teams.
The coach picks a team and a set of cones. (Ex. The lights are attacking at the blue cones) Then coach says. "Ready in 5...4...3...2..1" And then the attacking team has to run a line/play/etc.
Play like regular... tackling, rucking, mauling; make sure you know your position (forwards/backs).
Team who is defending make sure you defend in a line. Don't let gaps occur!

Tips for Practice
Suggestions to my beloved UMBC team:
Actually have a larger box for 2 on 3 (about 25meters by 10 meters...becuase I can't stand that stupid little tiny box we have when we do those drills).
New rugby drill:
Have the entire team. Do a half-lineout (only one side...our team) and then have the ball go out as normal. Don't leave the ball with the forwards for too long. Get the ball out, and have the faster forwards FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS OF THE BACKS as to where they should go to support (usually one forward on each side of a back, but a good 5 meters back) so that we cause a lot of confusion and have a lot of support.

Women's Rugby News: X-posted into your email acct!
Hey guys, how is everyone?!?!? OMGZ I DONT CARE LOLZZZZZZZZ! jay slash kay.
Remember tomorrow is our bigass bakesale and we Start up at 11am and go until 2pm. We really need people to help Animari set up, so if you could make contact with her, or just meet her in the commons a little before 11, that would be spectacular!
Also a big day tomorrow as it is our first PRACTICE!!!!! We should be on our best behaviours because we'll be practicing on ERK field where other non-rugger girls can see us (from 7-9pm). If we're big douchebags, then nobody will want to join. Let's make that our team motto: "Hurray! We're not Douchebags!" Awesome.
And from now on, we're going to make a weekly trip after practice to Latenight where we all have team bonding, food AND to recruit new people. This is actually one of the most important bullitens in this email. So please make an effort to eat with us tomorrow night after practice!
Thursday evening, there will be a Scrimmage with Chesapeake for everyone to join so that new (and old) players will learn how to play in an actual game. This is a TREMENDOUS learning Experience, so IF YOU DONT HAVE CLASS OR WORK, GOOOOOO WITH US! I have yet to find out a time for it, but It'll be around the same time as our practices (7-ish). I will be there to give 4 people rides and I know others with cars will provide rides as well! You will definately find out Tomorrow what time this thursday scrimmage will be.
And this is way ahead of its time, but I'm just giving you the heads up: There will be another bake sale in October (the 19th and 20th..TWO DAYS!) so that we make more money, AND we raise awareness of our homecoming game! We want to be popular, too! On those days, we should wear our homecoming dresses to the bake sale, so start shopping at thrift stores now!
See you all tomorrow!!!

I'm not sure if everyone knew about this--I just found out about it today--but the Sports Authority has a selection of rugby gear
. Other than their mistake of calling a scrum cap a "head guard," it doesn't seem too bad. You're not going to get the same selection as godek or anything else, but I guess this means that you can get some of this stuff in your local Sports Authority if you really, really need it..

DONT FORGET ABOUT PIZZA HUT!
|Monday, March 28th, 2005|
Hey everyone! I thought I'd take the liberty of posting something about.. dun dun dun! The MARFU playoffs![I'm only going to post only the women's results, just because they're the only ones that matter. ^_- If you really want to find out what the men's results are, I can post those up too... just ask.]
Women Division 1
UVA (VRU1) 118 - Salisbury (PRU3) 0
Navy (PRU2) 36 - West Chester (EPRU2) 5
Penn State (PRU1) 48 - Virginia Tech (VRU3) 0
Princeton (EPRU1) 47 - James Madison (VRU2) 10
Women Division 2
Mary Washington (VRU1) 15 - The College of New Jersey (EPRU 3) 5
York (EPRU 2) 43 - St. Mary's (PRU 2) 0
Temple (EPRU 1) 76 - Univ. of Richmond (VRU 3) 0
Univ. of Maryland (PRU 1) 65 - William & Mary (VRU 2) 0
This is courtesy of the PRU colleges yahoo group.. which isn't terribly interesting unless you like keeping track of administrative PRU stuff. The fact that College Park has done so well in the playoffs makes me a little sad, only because they re-started the team around the same time we did [two years ago! GEEZ! I'm old!]... but I take some small solace in the fact that they have a bigger pop pool and have had a coach since the very beginning. On the other hand, you know.. them rising this quickly means we can do it too, especially with our coach, who doesn't make us do annoying drills with gates.. ::ahem::
Also, for those of you who are in any way, shape or form Welsh [which I am certainly 100% not], you can be proud to know that Wales won
the Six Nations
...just my favorite picture from the game.
